A personal list of my favorite record stores to browse while visiting Chattanooga, TN.
I live in Nashville which is a short drive to Chattanooga. I’ve been visiting the city for years and will be there much more during the next four years while my twin sons begin attending the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga starting this fall.
Whenever I visit a city, I scope out record stores before arriving to hopefully attend as many as possible while in town.
See below for a list of my favorite Chattanooga record stores, in no particular order.
Yellow Racket Records
2311 E Main St, Chattanooga, TN 37404
Yellow Racket Records originally started as a record label for owner Ben VanderHart to release music for his band, Telemonster.
Ben then decided to open a brick and mortar store as well, signing his lease in early 2020, right before COVID-19 shut down the world. Ben forged ahead and opened the store in August of 2020 and is still going strong today.
Yellow Racket sells a variety of new and used records, including equipment such as turntables….oh, and they serve COFFEE.
Not only do I enjoy visiting the store, but I’ve also ordered online before and had items shipped to me in Nashville.
Below is a great video interview with owner, Ben Vanderhart.
St. Pete Records
4639 Shallowford Rd Suite B, Chattanooga, TN 37411
St. Pete Records was originally located in St. Petersburg, FL, but moved to Chattanooga in the summer of 2021.
St. Pete’s carries a healthy selection of 45s, records and even CDs for those of us who still buy CDs and CD players.
One thing to note, at the time of this article, St. Pete’s is only open Thursday – Sunday.
For The Record
412 Northgate Mall Dr, Chattanooga, TN 37415
I’ve yet to make it to For The Record, which is located inside the Northgate Mall in the Chattanooga/Hixson area, but it’s on the top of my list for my next visit.
I could write an entire article featuring memories from my childhood and going to the mall to shop for cassettes and CDs in stores like Sam Goody, Camelot, etc. It was a BIG DEAL when Mom let us spend money on new music.
I expect those memories to come flooding back when I step inside Northgate Mall and visit For The Record!
Inherent Records
40A Frazier Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37405
Inherent Records is located inside Collective Clothing which is great for me because while I shop for records, the rest of my family can shop for vintage clothes.
Also, be sure to check out Inherent’s music podcast!
McKay’s Chattanooga
As I mentioned before, I live in Nashville, where we also have a McKay’s store.
McKay’s is where I go when I want to be overwhelmed by the amount of books, CDs, records, movies, toys and more. It’s also a favorite with my family as they can shop for books while I’m shopping for music.
Fair warning…at least in Nashville, McKay’s record prices can vary greatly from release to release. Don’t be surprised if you see a popular album priced too high but keep looking because deals can be found on lesser known gems.
Chad’s Records
40 Frazier Ave, Chattanooga, TN 37405
Chad’s Records is located inside The Winder Binder Mercantile on Frazier Ave.
Again, Winder Binder is perfect shopping for my family because I’m looking at records, they can browse books, folk art, toys and more!
I always have a great time shopping for records in Chattanooga and hopefully this guide will steer you in the right direction when you visit.
I enjoyed each store on this list and can’t wait to go back and do more shopping in Chattanooga. I know there are other stores, especially antiques, that we still have to visit!
